Smoking Policy

Dear Members,

Your committee has for some time been considering what more appropriate arrangements may be made for our members that smoke. We feel that everyone will agree that members and guests collecting at the entrance to the Club is not the best arrangement, but this is currently, and at times in the future, the only option available to us.

Following further discussion and consideration of the laws appertaining to smoking we are proposing, once the necessary notices and waste facilities are in place, to carry out a 3 month experiment by making part of the Patio area available for smoking when access to it via the quiet room is practical. At other times the only alternative will remain for smoking to be permitted at the club entrance.

The rules for the use of the patio for smoking will be:

· During the experiment, whilst we are unable to stop smoking on the front entrance to the Club, we request that if the Patio area is accessible then smokers should use that area

· It may only be used when access is available via the quiet room

· Access via the quiet room can only be made when no organisation has booked the room.

· There should be no smoking on the patio when food is being served/consumed on the patio (by food we mean prepared food not crisps, nuts etc.)

· Access to the patio area is not permitted via the disabled access. It is felt inappropriate for members to walk in front of the club and on a public highway, carrying alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks

· There is a legal requirement for the door leading from the quiet room to the patio to be closed when the patio is available for smoking. This also applies to the front entrance.

· If sadly there should be the need for adjudication in respect to the use of the patio area for smoking, members must recognise that the decision of the Steward and his staff will be final.

· Members, both smokers and non smokers, are asked to be considerate of others during this experimental period. Whatever the success of this proposal, the arrangements will be reviewed at the end of the period. Your committee would welcome comments from members regarding these smoking arrangements. These will be considered at committee but we do ask that you recognise this to be an emotive subject and for comments to be constructive whether of a positive or negative nature.

We would also ask members and guests who wish to smoke and have to do so at the club entrance to keep noise and particularly the use of mobile telephones to a minimum.
